Server-Side Imagemap

Imagemaps used to be done by embedding HTML map commands and data into the HTML documents, or by using CGI scripts.

You can still do that, but our (NCSA 1.5) Web server has imagemap functions built-in. There's no CGI script for you to deal with, and you get much better performance.

To use an imagemap, you construct the .map file using your favorite tool; the .map file is a standard format for (almost) all Web servers. The following lines implement a map by associating the two specified files. <A HREF="http://www.yourDomain.com/anyDirectory/anyName.map"> <IMG SRC="/anyDirectory/anyName.gif" ISMAP> </A> Notes:

the .map extension is required for the map file; the .gif can be any of the standard graphic file extensions.
by using /maps for the directory, the server will reference the special /maps directory up at the /htdocs level of your Web site's directory tree; this keeps anyone but you and the server from accessing your maps.
